Parkour or l’art du déplacement, “the art of movement” is an activity with the aim of moving from one point to another as efficiently and quickly as possible, using principally the abilities of the human body. It is meant to help one overcome obstacles, which can be anything in the surrounding environment—from branches and rocks to rails and concrete walls. We are capping the clinic at 30 people to ensure everyone receives quality coaching. This will also feature free running technique, basic agility, jumping, vaulting, and coordination.

During the beginner seminar Jim will go over headstands, handstand, handstand pushups, pistols and muscle ups. This seminar is excellent for everybody from the beginner to somebody who needs to improve their form. Haven’t gotten your first muscle up or handstand? Maybe this could be the day that you do. Jim will break all of these movements down, demonstrate and explain them to you. Because the class is limited to just 12 people you will have ample time to ask questions and get specialized attention.

During the expert seminar Jim will go over handstand correction one arm handstand work, handstand presses/planche work and advanced ring skill such as forward roll, kip up, front lever and back lever. A perfect handstand is not required but it is recommended that you are comfortable performing the muscle up. This seminar will take your skills to the next level and it is also limited to 12 people giving. Jim the opportunity to focus on each member in the seminar.

The seminar schedule is as follows. If there is enough interest we will add a third seminar. 8am-10am Beginner Seminar 12pm-2pm Advanced Seminar

Cost:
Before March 26th:
$65 per seminar or $125 for both
After March 26th:
$85 per seminar or $160 for both.

Parkour: A New Martial Art

With all the thousands of schools of martial arts out there, you might think that the range of movements of the human body have been more or less mapped out. Every once in a while though, someone surprises you and comes up with something interesting.

Parkour or l’art du déplacement, “the art of movement is an activity with the aim of moving from one point to another as efficiently and quickly as possible, using principally the abilities of the human body. It is meant to help one overcome obstacles, which can be anything in the surrounding environment—from branches and rocks to rails and concrete walls

This is a uniquely French activity, the art of running away.

Parkour is already starting to show up in movies, indeed you’ve probably seen some already. The opening chase scene in the last James Bond movie, Casino Royale, used Parkour heavily. A new subgenre of running away action movies has begun to emerge. Check out this clip from the French flick “District B13, which used practitioners of parkour including the founder of the modern version of artform, David Belle.

This is good stuff, but there is something holding them back, a part of their philosophy that is actually pretty silly. They wont allow competition within the art.

“Competition pushes people to fight against others for the satisfaction of a crowd and/or the benefits of a few business people by changing its mindset. Parkour is unique and cannot be a competitive sport if it ignores its altruistic core to self development. If parkour becomes a sport, it will be hard to seriously teach and spread parkour as a non-competitive activity. And a new sport will be spread that may be called parkour, but that won’t hold its philosophical essence anymore.

That is ridiculous. Touchy feely nonsense like that might make hippies feel good, but it’s dangerous for a budding martial art. First, competition is what drives people to improve. Without competition Parkour, or any art form, would ultimately stagnate and fail. Second, competition is human nature. If Parkour does not embrace its own nature as a sport, practitioners will do so on their own and that will lead to injuries.
