Ever hit a brick wall in life? We all have at some point…remember the first job you applied for, and got the nice letter on company letterhead thanking you for your interest in the company; however, the letter stated that we do not have an opportunity for you at this time. For a moment, you are taken back; pondering how you could have interviewed differently (Did I wear the wrong tie or outfit? Was my response to their questions off the mark?). When I first attempted to get into Medical Sales I received a letter from Eli Lilly and Company that basically said, “Thanks, but no thanks! (Emphasis on the ‘no thanks’). Undeterred by the set back, I made every effort to continue to apply for jobs and finally broke into the industry at the ripe old age of 22. The point is that “brick walls” exist for a reason. They exist to test our mental fortitude and to truly measure how bad we want something. You have heard the cliché before, but it rings true, ‘your undying passion and persistence will allow you to accomplish your goals, dreams and aspirations.’

Another avenue this might have occurred in your life is when you meet someone that you are interested in pursuing a date, relationship, etc. with. Maybe at first, they say no or blow you off, but undeterred, you continue to pursue the opportunity (no, I am not encouraging stalking here). I am simply saying that if you see something in life that you want, you are in the driver seat to go after it and get it, whether it’s a job, a partner, or anything else you aspire to achieve, obtain or accomplish.

Crossfit is an excellent mental teacher for this skill. Whether it is your first pull up, muscle up, or a sub-5 minute Fran, Crossfit presents an ongoing set of challenges that not only test your physically, but test your mental muscle to overcome things that you are currently aren’t capable of. So during your next workout, challenge yourself to break through that wall…a faster time, a new skill, whatever that may be. Set a goal for each workout that challenges what you perceive that you are capable of, you will surprise yourself on what you can actually do. Your Crossfit trainers will push you and encourage you to get there as well.

Last week, we had a member (Lora) who had limited exposure to the Split Jerk, during the class lead by Head Trainer, Craig, she was able to reach new heights in her Split Jerk. On that day, Lora steamed through her own brick wall. Will you bull rush yours? Yes, you will…
